Tao Zan, male, is a Chief Physician, Doctoral Supervisor, and Research Fellow in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
In 2008, he received his PhD in Plastic Surgery from Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. He has been a visiting scholar in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan, USA, and at Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, France.
In the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, Chief Physician Tao Zan has long been committed to tackling the repair and reconstruction of severe craniofacial disfigurement, scar repair, and regenerative medicine, advancing clinical diagnosis and treatment and scientific research in tandem. The team led by Professor Qingfeng Li, of which he is a member, abandoned the mainstream overseas approach of facial allotransplantation, which has many problems, and took a novel approach using autologous tissue repair. Building on traditional tissue expansion repair techniques, they proposed a series of new techniques represented by “tissue prefabrication repair” and “stem cell-mediated skin expansion regeneration”, established a treatment system for severe craniofacial disfigurement, and systematically improved the efficacy of treatment for common burn scars, significantly reducing the number of operations; the reoperation rate decreased from 72.5% to 19.2%. For total facial disfigurement that was previously untreatable, the new treatment effectively reconstructed facial form and function, avoided many problems associated with facial allotransplantation, and was praised by international peers as “Chinese-style face replacement”.
In aesthetic plastic surgery, Chief Physician Tao Zan is proficient in various surgical and minimally invasive aesthetic procedures, including rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, fat grafting, botulinum toxin injection, hyaluronic acid filler injection, and others, performing hundreds of procedures annually. Drawing on solid aesthetic training and long-term clinical experience, he has distinctive insights into aesthetic plastic surgery. He also insists on face-to-face consultations, analyzes each patient's specific condition, and customizes individualized surgical plans, always upholding the compassionate heart of a physician.
Chief Physician Tao Zan is currently Vice Chair of the Youth Committee of the Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; a member of the Youth Committee of the Plastic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; a member of the Youth Committee of the Tissue Repair and Regeneration Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; a member of the Microsurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; a Standing Committee Member of the Plastic Surgery Branch of Integrative Medicine of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; a Standing Committee Member of the Regenerative Medicine and Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine; an Editorial Board Member of the Chinese Journal of Reparative and Reconstructive Surgery; and a Reviewer for Burns & Trauma, among others.
